Caden

I wasn’t Caden. I wasn’t Smoke. I was a stranger even to myself. A figment. An imposter. A ghost. Sometimes a killer. Other times a spy.

But always a monster.

Had I really loved Dawn so long ago, I would’ve told her to run. But in the end, I loved myself more and didn’t want to be without her.

And now what?

All three of us sat at my long dining table in silence. The space was for them, not me. I couldn’t be too close him or her. I wanted to kill them both. Dawn reeked of him. Even though she was on my right and several chairs away, I could smell him on her. Even though she’d showered and changed before coming down, Freddie radiated from her wicked flesh.

I turned to my left. Freddie glared at me as the servants placed dishes on the table. I let him see my own rage. Let it fill and thicken the air between us.

You’re mad? Good. Then swing first or look away.

Armed men remained in each corner of the room.

Once the servants left, Freddie knitted his fingers on the edge of the table. “So, you’re the game master?”

Dawn answered for me. “Yes, he is. From the first day I met him, he played games.”

Freddie continued to scowl at me. “Why?”

Dawn shook her head. “He won’t tell you the truth.”

“I will,” I said.

“So, then why the games?” Freddie asked.

“Because the core of my career deals with secrecy.” I leaned back in my chair. “Because Dawn kept getting too close, making me want to open up to her. The games kept her at bay. Kept me at bay. Had her focus on the maze that I’d built around her. I had to keep her running through the tunnels, turning corners, and racing toward dead ends.”

Avoiding her food, Dawn grabbed her wine glass and sipped. “And so, he played the dead ex-girlfriend game with me.”

Anger blazed in Freddie’s eyes. “What’s that?”

“He found me because I looked like a woman in an oil painting.” Dawn sipped more of her wine. “He figured out where I would be, bought the museum, showed up at the event, and intentionally bumped into me as if we were a cheesy chapter in a romance novel.”

Freddie looked at her and then me. “Are you serious?”

“Oh, this gets better and better,” Dawn added. “All of his lines were planned. He swept me off my feet, took my friends and me out to this island, and was an amazing guy. The only problem was that he kept me dressed a particular way. Always in lace and green. And he wanted me to wear this emerald choker all of the time and keep my hair a certain way.”

It was hard not to fidget with the napkin. It was hard not to look at her or even get up from the table. But everything had changed and my head was fogged. My mind was crowded with so much regret. Sadness for how I’d destroyed Dawn and me. Deep guilt for all the people that had died by my actions across the world.
